School of Health: MATLAB License Access

Summary

The School of Health (SOH) provides our member researchers with access to a Concurrent Client license to MATLAB and selected toolboxes upon request. This license will allow researchers to install MATLAB on their lab computers for research use.

Cost-Sharing Model

The license was obtained via an up-front investment by the School of Health, and involves a continuing expense to renew the license every year. In that light, access is now being provided through a cost-sharing model with researchers.

Member researchers can request access to the license for themselves and their RAs/students/trainees. Subsequently, usage activity is logged on the license server and that is combined and invoiced to the Principle Investigator (PI) for the users that are in their teams.

An hourly rate will be applied for MATLAB, SIMULINK, and any toolboxes that are used. Time will be measured in 15-minute increments. Costs will be capped per fiscal year. The rates and annual caps were selected to keep the cost well below the price of purchasing your own standalone MATLAB licensing.

Usage Rates:

Product Rate Cost Cap
MATLAB, SIMULINK $0.75/hour Up to a maximum of $100 per year, per user
Toolboxes $0.25/hour Up to a maximum of $20 per year, per user

Cost tracking

Your usage to-date (per fiscal year) can be reviewed in BookR in the MatLAB license report (see under "My Menu") which shows how many licenses of are in use, then click the "Track Cost Sharing" link.

PIs/supervisors will be able to see usage of everyone linked to them. RAs/students will only see their own usage.

Accessing the MATLAB License

Supervising researchers can request access to the license for themselves and their students the same way they do for any laboratory access at the School of Health: by filling the standard access request and checking off the MATLAB option.
